New to Plants? Start With These 5 Fail-Proof Favourites

If you’ve ever brought home a plant full of excitement, only to watch it slowly decline… you’re not alone. I’ve been there too, and it’s frustrating, confusing, and honestly a little discouraging.

You Can Grow Beautiful Plants, Heres Where to Start:

Before I get into my top 5 beginner houseplants, I want to share the thing that changed everything for me: the soil. Once I learned how much the foundation mattered, the biology, the structure, the moisture balance, plant care suddenly felt lighter, calmer, and so much more joyful.

That’s exactly why I created our Starter Growing Bundle. It simplifies those early steps and gives your plants the kind of start that helps them thrive from the very beginning. You don’t have to guess your way through plant care. You can start with confidence.

Once you have the right soil, these are the five houseplants I always recommend to first-time plant parents. They’re forgiving, low-maintenance, and perfect for apartments and busy lives. If you’ve ever worried about “doing it wrong,” these plants are here to prove that you can absolutely do this.

1.) Pothos

If houseplants had a beginner crown, pothos would wear it.

Pothos are incredibly undemanding and adaptable. They trail beautifully down shelves and bookcases, with heart-shaped leaves that come in bright green, creamy white, or marbled patterns. One of the best parts? They can grow in soil or water, making them perfect for experimenting and learning.

They thrive in indirect light, don’t mind the occasional missed watering, and grow happily in our regenerative potting mix. You can even snip a cutting, pop it in water, and watch roots form, it’s one of the most rewarding ways to build confidence as a plant parent.

The only thing to note is that pothos are toxic to cats and dogs, so if you have curious pets, I recommend growing them up high where they can safely trail down.

2. Pilea Plant

This plant is proof that easy can still be beautiful.

The Pilea plant is loved for its round, coin-shaped leaves and its reputation for bringing good luck. It’s slow-growing, which means you won’t need to repot it often, making it ideal for smaller spaces and beginners.

It prefers bright, indirect light and regular but gentle watering. Nothing complicated, just simple, mindful care. It’s a great choice if you want a plant that feels intentional and design-forward without being high maintenance.

3. Spider Plant

Spider plants will always have a soft spot in my heart.

They’re one of my favourite housewarming gifts to give because they’re almost impossible to mess up. Spider plants are happy hanging in baskets or sitting on shelves where their long, arching leaves can spill over the edges.

They don’t require much attention, they bounce back easily, and they’re known for helping purify indoor air. In warmer months, you can even move them outdoors for the summer before bringing them back inside.

As a bonus, spider plants produce little “babies” that you can propagate and share , a perfect plant for growing your confidence and your collection at the same time.

4. ZZ Plant

The ZZ plant is the plant I recommend when someone tells me, “I forget about my plants.”

ZZ plants are incredibly resilient. They tolerate low and indirect light just as well as brighter spaces, and they can go long stretches without water thanks to their thick, water-storing roots. If consistency isn’t your strong suit yet, this plant won’t judge you.

Their glossy, upright leaves add a clean, modern look to any space, and they’re slow growers, which means very little upkeep. Less repotting, less stress, more wins.

5. Rubber Leaf Plant

If you’re ready for a plant that feels bold but still beginner-friendly, the rubber plant is a great next step.

Rubber plants have large, dramatic leaves that instantly elevate a space. They like bright, indirect light and consistent watering, but they’re far more forgiving than they look.

They grow slowly and steadily, which gives you time to learn their rhythm. With healthy soil and good drainage, they’ll reward you with strong roots and beautiful new leaves over time.

These five plants are proof that plant care doesn’t have to be complicated or stressful. With a little support and the right soil beneath them, they can thrive in almost any home, and so can you as a plant parent.

If you’re ready to build that foundation, my Starter Growing Bundle is designed to make those first steps simple and beginner-friendly.
